How to shop for and buy house paint online in Canada

How to shop for and buy house paint online in Canada

Picking the right paint online can be an overwhelming task. Not only are there hundreds of paint brands and colour options but everyone uses different names for the same thing. Plus throw in sheen, paint type, finish and protection then you have a whole new world to master.

Step One: Choose your product

The first step in finding the right paint for your project is to decide what kind of paint you need. Paint comes in many different varieties and finishes, so it’s important to know what type you need before shopping.

Paint comes in two main categories: interior and exterior. The main difference between the two types is their durability, with exterior paint being made to withstand rain, sun and other elements.

Once you've narrowed down your search by product type, it's time to narrow down your search further by brand (our favourite is Benjamin Moore), use (i.e. ceiling paint) or room (i.e. bathroom paint, paint for basements, etc), or feature (i.e. low VOC). This can be done by filtering products by category on most e-commerce sites or by searching for specific brands or products on Google or Pinterest .

Step 2: Choose your colour

If you haven't already confirmed the colour for your paint project, now is the time!

There are more than 4000 colour options in the Benjamin Moore Collection alone, so you'll need to start narrowing things down.

Start by identifying which broad colour family you're looking for (i.e. blues, greens, or greys) and what kind of colour scheme you're drawn to (i.e. monochromatic or complementary).

You can browse our collection of popular colours, or search by colour family. Whatever colour you decide on, it's important to try the colour at home before you commit to buying a gallon or more!

We offer a couple of different ways you can get paint samples online:

  • You can order free paper paint chips online, and we'll mail them to you. https://sanctuarypaint.com/products/free-colour-chips
  • You can order sample pots of Benjamin Moore paint online, which come packaged as half pint samples in a plastic twist top jar. https://sanctuarypaint.com/collections/colour-samples/products/paint-colour-samples?variant=10647293755428
  • You can purchase Big Paint Chips online, and we'll deliver 12x12" peel-and-stick wall stickers with real paint directly to your home, so you can test out your favourite colours without the mess or stress of test patches. We also offer packages of 6 of the most popular shades in a colour family to make it easy to find the perfect shade. https://sanctuarypaint.com/pages/big-paint-chip-collections

Whichever way you order your paint samples, be sure to test the colour in your room, in different lighting and at different times of day. That will help ensure you find the right shade for your project.

Step three: Select your sheen

After you've selected the right product and found the perfect shade for your paint, it's time to select your sheen. Sheen refers to the how shiny the finish will look. When deciding on sheen you will want to consider whether that area is high/low traffic and the condition of the wall.

Flat/Matte

The look of a flat or matte provides great depth of color that is also ideal for less-than-perfect surfaces. Flat is typically used for ceilings and low traffic areas.

Eggshell & Satin

The slight sheens of eggshell and satin reveal color with a softly polished glow with an easy-to-clean surface that's great for all high-traffic areas including living rooms and hallways. This is also a great product for colored ceilings to help reflect some light onto the color.

Semi-gloss

Semi-gloss is particularly durable and stands up well to repeated cleanings. It is often recommended for moldings and trim.

Pearl

Pearl is in the middle of the sheen spectrum. It has an almost iridescent quality, and because it creates a smooth, less porous surface, it's easier to clean and is often used in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as for trim details, such as doors, window frames, base moldings, and crown moldings.

Step four: Order your interior or exterior paint online for delivery anywhere in Canada.
